Industry Applications

Titration is incredibly important in many different industries. One example of this is within the wine industry, where titration can help determine acidity and sulphur dioxide. Total acidity directly affects the colour and flavour of wine and, depending on the style of the wine, is sought in a perfect balance with the sweet and bitter sensations of other components. Too much acidity makes wine tart and sharp; too little makes wine flat, flabby and uninteresting. Proper acidity is what makes it refreshing and an ideal accompaniment to food. Similarly it is important to keep an eye on your sulphur dioxide levels  as adding correct levels of SO2 avoids oxidation, as well as suppressing the activity of enzymes that causes browning and other problems.

There are also a variety of other uses of titration, including other markets within the food industry such as the dairy industry, as well as testing for a range of parameters in different industries: Petrochemical (TAN, TBN, Chloride, etc), Pharmaceutical (titration with HClO4, Carbonate, enzymatic determinations, etc), Water analysis (pH, hardness, ammonia, etc), Chemical products (NaOH, KOH, Carbonates, etc) and the planting industry (Ag+, Ni2+, Zn2+, etc).
