Colourimetric Test Kits

A colorimetric chemical test kit offers a quick and easy way to test for a number of parameters in water.

They work by taking a sample of the water to be tested and adding a small amount of chemical reagent which is supplied with the kit (most Hanna kits include enough reagent for 100 tests). The reagent is a specially formulation of chemicals which react with the particular compound you are looking to measure and as they react a colour develops in the liquid. The strength of the developed colour dictates the amount of the compound you are measuring.

For example:

Chlorine tests kits use a reagent known as DPD which reacts with the Chlorine present in the water to develop a pink colour. The lighter the pink colour, the less Chlorine is present in the water, whereas the darker the pink colour, the more Chlorine is present. By comparing the developed colour against a pre-printed colour cube which is marked out with a Chlorine scale you can easily ascertain the amount of Chlorine present in the water.
